The history of Chinese herbal remedies is a large part of the history of herbs, period.

The history of natural Chinese remedies extends back more than 5,000 years.

According to tradition, over 5,000 years ago, mythical emperor Shen Nung discovered many herbs, experimenting on himself, noting their effects. He is reputed to have died after ingesting a poisonous herbs. So Shen Nung’s life offered both instruction & a cautionary tale regarding Chinese healing herbs.

Shen Nung is credited with China’s first great book, Pen Tsao Ching (The Classic of Herbs) cataloguing Chinese herbal remedies including ephedrine & poppy.

However, Pen Tsao Ching was first written out around 100 A.D. In it was the collective wisdom of several Chinese herbalists. In the succeeding centuries many natural Chinese remedies were added on to the roster of herbs including cinnamon, garlic, ginseng & tea.

By the middle ages a 52 volume encyclopedic catalogue of Chinese healing herbs was developed. It included over 1,000 herbs & 11,000 herbal formulations.

Presently, Chinese herbalists use 150 herbs believed to be indispensable & around another 150 support herbs. Many of the indispensable Chinese healing herbs are included in our list. Some of these Chinese herbal remedies include dang qui, dandelion, ginger, lotus & senna.

Today, in China Western medicine is integrated alongside Chinese medicine.

Acceptance of Chinese medicine including herbals boomed in the 1970’s after President Nixon’s trip to the People’s Republic of China. Many Westerners were treated to reports & film of surgery being performed under the anesthesia of acupuncture & of chronic illnesses being successfully treated with natural Chinese Medicine.

So, why the popularity of herbs from China? Simple. THEY WORK.

Also, Chinese herbs have essentially been “tested” safe & effective in the real lab, the real world.

Chinese herbology is informed by China’s unique, enlightened perspective on health and illness.

Chinese medicine posits that health disorders result from imbalances in the body. Makes sense when you consider that substances aren’t inherently “bad” or “good” for you. It depends on their respective amounts. If such substances are present in the right balance, you will experience health.

For example, too much sodium in your body can cause imbalances leading to hypertension & fatigue. But too little can cause the same.

Chinese medicine is somewhat holistic when it comes to how to maintain health. But it does have its equivalents of Western medicine’s “magic bullets.” Those would be its specialized herbs & herbal combinations to improve health & fight off illness.

Like most herbs, Chinese herbal remedies are generally safe to use. However, if you are pregnant or nursing, use herbs under medical supervision. Also, if you are suffering from serious or chronic disorders to vital systems, like cardiovascular, do likewise & speak to an informed Chinese herbologist regarding the best course of action for you.
