Thrush is an overgrowth of yeast in a baby's mouth or, less likely, adults mouth (or other places). The yeast is known as "candida". It normally lives in our mouth, intestines, and genitalia. It usually thrives in moist, warm environments. The problem occurs when this yeast overgrows becoming visible as white patches. There are 4 ways to tell if it’s thrush: * Thrush is usually seen on the inside of cheeks, lips, on gums & tongue. * Thrush usually persists for weeks. Milk patches just come and go according to feedings. * Difficult to wipe off. * If either baby or a breastfeeding mom has recently taken antibiotics then any suspicious white patches in baby's mouth are more likely to be thrush. Causes of thrush Often, there are no known causes to thrush. It is not passed from baby to baby. It is usually simply an overgrowth of the baby's own yeast. However, antibiotics can kill the bacteria that live in the mouth which keeps the yeast from overgrowing. That yeast ends up developing into thrush Luckily, thrush is not harmful though it can be irritating during feeding. If severe, though, it can be painful. Prevent this by using nursing pads made without a plastic barrier because this kind of material can create an environment conducive to growth of candida. Bottle and Nipple Care: Use hot water to clean bottle nipples and pacifiers on a regular basis.
