Home remedies for sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the bony cavities about the nasal passage. It is usually accompanied by infection. Congestion is yet another complication in sinusitis so any number of herbs for sinus problems can ease inflammation and symptoms.

Other pages (links above & below) in Herbal Remedies World deal directly with related problems but this page deals specifically with inflammation only.

If the major issue in your condition is infection and/or congestion please visit our links to those issues.

Much of the following list comes from our page on anti-inflammatory herbs.

* Oregon grapefruit is antimicrobial, astringent and anti-inflammatory, the latter being key to its ability to combat sinusitis. Best taken as tincture, approximately 50 drops in divided daily doses.

* Turmeric is a superb herbal remedy for sinusitis and inflammation in general. Take 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric extracts (available in caplets or tablets) 3x per day.

Whole turmeric is best. It may take awhile for benefits so be patient. Remember that curry mixtures usually contain a good amount of turmeric so feel free to have lots of curried dishes and, if they are spicy, they can help relieve congestion also.

* Ginger is also one of the excellent sinusitis herbs, a potent anti inflammatory, in addition to being one of the superior all-around herbs.

Take 1 - 2 capsules (500 to 1,000 mg) twice a day with food. You can double dose at the beginning of symptoms. Also use ginger liberally in foods or make as a tea.

* Boswellin is also a good natural anti inflammatory. Take two capsules, 2x a day or follow label directions.

* Arnica can also be used for sinusitis and inflammation in general. Use as directed.

* Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory enzyme and so might be useful for sinusitis. Chewing bromelain tablets may help place active ingredients close to the nasal passages.

In the same vein, you can eat papaya since it contains an enzyme that has anti inflammatory effects. Here too you can simply chew on good tasting tablets several times daily.

* Devils claw is also an anti inflammatory herb. Useful for arthritis, it can also help address sinusitis.

* Licorice root is an effective anti-inflammatory. However, long-term use can raise blood pressure and lead to potassium loss.

Take one-eighth to one-quarter teaspoon of extract up to three times daily.

* St. John's wort is better known for its antidepressant properties can also address inflammation of the sinus cavity. Follow label directions.

* White willow bark, aspirin’s natural cousin, is also anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving. Use supplement as directed.
