GERD, an acronym for “Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, is also termed “acid reflux.” It is a condition in which acids from the stomach flows back up into the esophagus.

It is similar to heartburn, but GERD is a condition that is more consistent, prolonged and more serious. The consistent acid reflux irritates the lining of the esophagus, or food pipe causing inflammation and ulcers in the esophagus. It may lead to a narrowing of the esophagus.

Untreated, GERD places sufferers at risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Symptoms of GERD

* Heartburn

* Chest pain, made worse when lying down

* Problems swallowing (dysphagia)

* Regurgitating food, or sour liquid

* Coughing, hoarseness, sore throat, and wheezing

Best home remedies for Gerd

* Probably the best home remedy to keep acid reflux at bay is eating a healthy diet that minimizes the production of stomach acid.

Some foods are known to cause acid reflux symptoms for many people. These include fatty foods, spicy foods, particular spices, some citrus fruits, and caffeine.

* Apple cider vinegar: A good GERD herb is apple cider vinegar taken just before or with your meal. Mix one tablespoon with water. Use the organic variety of ACV containing the cloudy, healthful “mother.”

* Cancer bush (Sutherlandia frutescens) has been used by Southern Africans for thousands of years to improve digestion.

* Coconut water is one of the better herbal remedies for GERD that's especially helpful in the initial 24 hours of treatment. It relaxes the stomach and intestines and provides it necessary vitamins and minerals.

* As suggested on page one of this topic, a host of other GERD herbs can also be helpful. These include ginger, chamomile, peppermint, papaya, pineapple and slippery elm.
