Canker sores and other oral sores were problems that early American settlers tackled with herbs. They used myrrh to treat canker sores, a practice that has been borne out by modern herbology.

Canker sores are painful ulcers around the mouth or inner lips. They usually clear up with a week but can recur soon after.

Common foods that trigger or worsen canker sores include alcohol, citrus fruits, coffee, dairy, spicy foods and tomatoes.

The basic cause for canker sores are not well known. However, some experts cite allergies, immune dysfunction, viral infections and nutritional deficiencies as possible culprits.

Canker sores are pretty common with ½ - ¼ of American suffering from them at some point.

There isn’t much that doctors can do for canker sores. They are usually treated with antibiotics or steroids to relieve pain and inflammation.

Icing and saltwater rinses are some common home remedies for canker sores that are recommended. Eliminating any foods that trigger allergic reactions are also suggested.

Herbs for canker sores

* Echinacea can help numb the throbbing pain from canker sores. Put 20 drops of tincture in half a cup of water and use as a mouth rinse several times daily.

* Goldenseal is astringent and antiseptic making it ideal for treating sores and infections. You can make a mouthwash out of goldenseal by making a tea out of it, steep until cool then use as a mouth wash several times daily. Can also put 25 drops of tincture in half a cup of water and use as a mouth rinse. Note: Don’t use if you are pregnant or nursing.

* Gotu Kola is generally helpful for healing wounds and so is one of the better home remedies for cold sores. Take a couple of cups of tea daily and use as a mouth rinse.

* Licorice (glycyrrhiza glabra) makes an excellent tea for mouth sores. Its tannin content make it antiseptic while other parts speed healing. Open a capsule and place a bit of the powder on the sore.

* Myrrh, as noted above, is a traditional remedy for sores that has been endorsed by modern science. Germany’s scientific commission recommends myrrh for mouth sores due to its antiseptic tannins. You can simply apply powder inside of myrrh capsules right to wound.

* Tea has a high tannin level which also makes helpful in alleviating canker sores. Simply make a tea, let it cool and swish drink about the mouth before drinking it down Then place the cooled, spent tea bag directly on your canker sore. Other teas that can be used include eucalyptus, St.-John’s wort, sage, peppermint, raspberry and licorice.
