Boils have been around for thousands of years, or longer. They were even noted as one of the ten plagues in the Bible wreaked on the Ancient Egyptians to force them to let the Israelites go. Today, they are not quite a plague but are a source of extreme discomfort and embarrassment. They could be quite painful and very unattractive. They usually start out looking quite harmless. Maybe, a red spot or a pimple on your underarm one day becomes a swollen, painful lump the next. Luckily, even though they look and feel awful, boils are usually harmless. Many of the treatments for boils have been around since Ancient Egypt dealt with their epidemic of boils. Boils, called “furuncles“ by medical workers, result from bacterial infections, usually staphylococcus. These bacteria set up shop in a hair follicle. Bacteria usually enter a hair follicle via a blockage that could occur from a lotion or oily ointment or other irritations. People who get boils are frequently ally staph carriers making them more prone to get boils. Other skin problems like acne and dermatitis or diabetes and anemia, increases risk of contracting staph. Men are at greater risk than women to get boils. Boils can appear wherever there are hair follicles, most likely on the face, scalp, underarm, groin, thigh, or butt. They vary in size from small, pimple-size sores to large, painful lumps, but normally more than one-half inch in diameter. Boil last about two weeks. Typically, the boil grows quickly, fill up with pus, and bursts. After a boil drains, it begins to heal. A carbuncle is a cluster of boils and are usually found at the back of the neck or the thigh. There may be whitish, bloody discharge from the carbuncle. Carbuncles are more serious than boils and can be accompanied by fatigue and fever. Carbuncles require medical attention.
Home remedies for boils
* An age old treatment for boils is the old jelly jar trick. "Cupping" a boil using a jar, involves applying suction to a boil by placing a jar over the infected area. You can use a cup also. Simply, boil a cup in a pot of water for a few minutes. Remove the cup with tongs, let it cool down a little before putting it over the boil. Note: if the cup is too cool, there won't be any suction. If it‘s too hot, it‘ll burn you. As the cup cools over the boil, the suction draws in blood and circulation. Then blot and wash the pus away. * Cornmeal is also one of the home remedies for boils. It’s not particularly medicinal but it’s absorptive properties make it an effective treatment for boils. Just bring ½ cup water to a boil, add cornmeal to make a thick paste. Apply the mush as a poultice to the boil, and cover with a cloth. Repeat every couple of hours until the boil comes to a head and drains. Click here for more herbal remedies for boils
