* Buchu (Agathosma betulina) has been used by natives of Southern Africa for hundreds of years. Buchu has been used traditionally to cleanse the urinary tract and act as a natural tonic. It is believed to help to flush out the bladder and entire urinary tract system.

* Cranberry: Probably the choice for preventing UTI. Its beneficial effects on UTI was discovered by German researchers in the 1840s. Around 1900, American researchers concluded that cranberry helps prevent UTI.

During the 1960s, conclusions on the benefits of cranberry flip flopped. However, starting in the 1980s and into the 1990s many studies showed that cranberry does prevent UTI.

One study showed a simple cranberry juice cocktail prevents germs that cause UTI from sticking to the lining of the urinary tract which helps prevent infection.

Most of the studies on cranberry juice use a cocktail because pure cranberry juice is very acidic and too tart too drink. For relief from urinary tract infection try drinking two glasses of cranberry juice cocktail daily. Some health food stores sell concentrated cranberry extract capsules. Take as directed.

Other stores carry dried cranberries. A handful daily could also be helpful apart from providing a healthy snack.

* Bearberry Leaf (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) has been used as a traditional remedy for the cleansing the urinary tract. Two studies evaluated the urine of people who were taking bearberry and found positive results.
