* Licorice (glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the major Chinese herbs. It's one of the better herbs for ulcers because it contains a powerful chemical called glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) which heals many ailments. Studies show concentrated GA heals ulcers.

Unfortunately its side effect includes raising blood pressure. Scientists found that removing 97% of the GA from licorice helps it retain its healing benefits while eliminating side effects. Using licorice for ulcers should be done in consultation with a medical professional.

* Yellowroot is an antibiotic that helps control H. pylori bacteria that is implicated in ulcers. It would be wise to try tincture or tea before going to antibiotics which lend many negative side effects.

* Chamomile is one of my favorite herbs. Gentle and effective for a variety of conditions, I blend it with peppermint for a late night tea. Chamomile helps healing and decreases inflammation. It also reduces stress that may contribute to ulcers. Enjoy a cup at around noon, one or two before bed.

* Marshmallow root is excellent for soothing stomach. It works by forming a slippery mucilage which coats the ulcer. Make several cups of tea to be sipped throughout the day. Note: since the mucilage can absorb other drugs, you should avoid taking those drugs at the same time you sip marshmallow root tea.

* Slippery elm works like marshmallow root. Drink tea throughout the day or ½ tsp tincture 3 - 4x daily.

* I love when simple produce works to prevent or ease ills. Pineapple is a delicious fruit that could be consumed frequently. It eases ulcers through its glutamine content which is experimentally verified to counter ulcers. It also contains a digestive enzyme, bromelain, which generally eases stomach discomforts.
