* Dandelion is especially good for bloating. You can easily find dandelion tea. Manufactured products including capsules and tinctures, should be taken according to directions.

* Evening primrose oil is one of the most recommended herbs for premenstrual syndrome. It is supposed to manage mood swings, breast tenderness and fluid retention.

However, the research on the benefits of EPO for PMS is mixed. My advice would be to take it if you are also using it for other reasons such as arthritis, heart disease and stroke.

You can get evening primrose in many forms. Buy from a reputable manufacturer and take as directed.

* Sweet fennel has been credited for its support of regular healthy menstrual periods. It also supports water balance and is a liver tonic. You can chew fennel seeds or make a tea from bruised fennel seeds. For commercial preparations, use as directed.

* Chaste tree or, at least chaste berries from the chaste tree, have been used for menstrual problems since Ancient Greek & Roman times. Recent studies suggest that it is effective for normalizing menstrual cycles. It does this because of its effect on female sex hormones.

Take it in consultation with your doctor. Use the herb or tincture as directed.

Note: If suffering from moderate depression, you should avoid chaste berry because it raises progesterone which may be a factor in PMS with depression.

* Mate also called Yerba mate, is a stimulant that also helps relieve bloating. I’ve taken it as a tea, blending it with black tea for a refreshing cold drink.

* The use of parsley is my favorite herbal remedy for PMS because it is a widely available and much used herb. It is delicious and can be incorporated into many dishes. Its main benefit is that it helps relieve bloating and breast tenderness.

I like to use a bit in my freshly juiced boosters along with apple and carrot. It is great chopped up into salads, stews, sauces taking care to do so after the cooking process.

* Stinging nettle can also be used to make a tea which detoxifies the liver and reduce bloating and tenderness.

* Skullcap is useful for anxiety and irritability that is often spoofed as hallmarks of PMS.

* Soy products may also help ease symptoms of PMS because they have anti-estrogen properties. Other legumes, such as black beans, lima beans and the lowly pea, may do an even better job than soy.

* Valerian can be used like skullcap but take before bedtime because it helps induce sleep.

* Note: We have often touted coffee as an herb with health benefits. However you should consider eliminating or decreasing use if you are suffering from complicated PMS.
