Just a clarifier on herbal tea topics.

* Just about all teas are “herbal.”

I’m not sure that I could come up with a non-herbal tea, Coffee, for example, is a “tea,” right? It’s an infusion made out of roasted, ground coffee beans.

*All herbal teas are medicinal.

It’s just a question of what, for whom, when & how much?

You may have heard the story of the young Chinese apprentice studying under a revered herbal master.

The master tells the apprentice that before ascending to master status, the apprentice must go out and find an herb with no medicinal value, After several months, the dejected apprentice returns to the master’s shop, head hung low and states, “Master, apologies but I looked far and wide but unfortunately cannot find an herb with no medicinal value.” At that the Master applauded and with pride in his eyes tells his apprentice, “Well done, you have now discovered the essential truth of herbal medicine.”

Some important notes on herb teas

* Herbal tea remedies are the most common form of herbal remedies. Widely available, easy to prepare and usually quite cheap, herb tea is a staple of many persons diet.

The only real limiting factor in the use of herbal tea is that many herbs are unpleasant tasting. Some can’t even be made palatable by sweeteners and other flavorings. But most herbs are either very pleasant tasting or can be made so with a little help.

* Herbal tea preparations are not only designed to be drunk. These natural teas can be used as a compress or added to a bath.

* Generally, if no specific recipe is available, use 1 - 2 tsps of plant to a cup of hot water. More on how to make a great herb tea on our page on how to make your own herbal tea (link coming soon).

* Herbal tea remedies are not standardized so ask questions and use commonsense. Unlike extracts and capsules, you can’t be sure of how much of the medicinal component is in teas. That could vary depending on grower, age of tea and many other factors. In a way, you need to let your body be the lab.

* There is no clear cut answer as to whether you should mix up teas or only use one herb. Again use commonsense, ask questions. Generally, I would suggest using one herb per cup. You could always make another cup of tea using another herb later on.
