Herbal Slimming Tea - So, says the rectangular box of tea bags on the store shelf. But do these weight loss teas work and how? Read on…
For anywhere between 4 - 7 bucks, well that’s quite a bargain for a nice herbal tea for weight loss. Not really.
Products that are named “Slimming Tea” usually produce one or more of the following actions:
1) laxative
2) diuretic
3) appetite suppressant
All three types of actions lead to some weight loss, at least at the beginning. However, they are poor choices for healthy, sustained, safe weight loss.
In fact, their labeling is deceptive and their actions can be quite dangerous when you consider what they actually do, how sustained the weight loss is and what they cause the body to do.
1) A popular herbal slimming tea (“Ballerina”), and many others, contain laxative herbs, usually senna. Theis does nothing more than increase bowel movements. So you lose fecal matter and some water along with it.
Of course, increased bowel movements will lead to some weight loss but not fat loss. The little weight loss will probably be temporary as bowel functioning returns to normal.
But worse than the temporary nature of the weight loss is that regular use of these teas could lead to dependency on them. This may cause the colon system to become flaccid and weak.
2) Other popular herbal teas for weight loss act as diuretics (release water). They are also effective in the short run. If you lose water you will weigh less, at least for a short while. But as you return to normal, the weight will come right back.
Of course both laxative and diuretic teas cause no fat loss which is what most dieters are really after.
What’s more, the body will start to compensate for the water loss by trying to hold on to and pool the water that comes in.
Of serious concern, losing water can lead to any level of physical dehydration. Even mild dehydration can lead to decreased performance, fatigue and irritability. Sustained dehydration can set the stage for serious cardiovascular illness and other grave ills.
Interestingly, the best way to release excess water is to drink more water. This signals to your body that it’s okay to release pooled water that has already done its work.
3) Finally, certain slimming teas suppress the appetite which leads to some weight loss. Unfortunately, they are not terribly safe as they also result in anxiety, sleeplessness and heart palpitations.
On top of safety concerns, their long term effectiveness is also doubtful.

Does that mean that no herbal slimming tea should have a role in weight loss? Well, no. If you need an occasional laxative, after you’ve tried increasing fiber and water, the laxative teas can be beneficial. You’ll lose 1 - 3 ponds in a day or so.
So if you need to make some weigh-in, and if your doctor says it’s safe for you to do so, a laxative or diuretic action tea can be okay.
As for the appetite suppressant teas, the decision to use a product with powerful psychological and physical effects, such as appetite suppressance, is a decision that should only be made in consultation with your medical specialist.
