* The humble, ever-present banana is good for soothing a fiery ulcer. I’m sure we’ve all had a banana or two on an empty stomach and felt more settled. * Calendula is a great herb for ulcers. It is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, it’s just a “no” herb. It also stimulates the immune system and speeds healing of wounds. Its astringent properties help reduce bleeding so take if bleeding is a primary issue. Take several cups of tea daily, steeping a tsp of dried flowers in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes or a tsp of tincture 3x daily. * Cabbage is a traditional remedy for ulcers and for good reason. Studies suggest is 3x more effective than a consumer fooling placebo. But, honestly, you have to drink an awful lot of raw cabbage juice to feel relief, about a quart. I’d try a glass or two and maybe some cabbage soup but you’ve got to really love cabbage to go this route. * Red pepper, which is frankly good for a lot of ills and is a nutritional powerhouse, is anti-ulcerative. The hot kind features capsaicin which soothes and protects stomach lining. Just eat dishes featuring red peppers or take supplement as per directions, a little more at the start. * Rhubarb rounds out our list of common foods that prevent or manage ulcers. Makes sense, no? Real foods, from the earth, as opposed to “Frankenfoods,” lend so many benefits to us that the research community is just trying to catalogue them. Some time in the future, when the storehouse on information regarding the value of natural herbs, plants, seeds, nuts etc is overwhelming, I imagine a harried researcher going on some mountaintop and bellowing, “Just eat real foods!” And then you’ll walk out of McWendy’sKing, go to a produce store and get some spinach and chick peas. Back to rhubarb, eat only stalks. Luckily, rhubarb is incredibly versatile like tofu and delicious. Here’s a great page on rhubarb recipes One note, rhubarb may cause diarrhea so start with modest portions. * Mallow helps form soothing mucilage. You can go for a mallow tea several times daily or a tsp of tincture 3x daily. We have other great pages on ulcer remedies, links right below.
