* Clove oil is one of the better herbal remedies for scabies. It’s analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. Mix 10 drops of clove oil into a cup of olive or almond oil and apply to affected areas. If mixture is too strong for skin, dilute mixture. Note: do not use clove oil if pregnant.

* James Duke, a well respected herbalist and author, recommends using evening primrose oil mixed with St. John’s wort to help soothe skin and immediately relieve itching from insect bites. Simply, steep flowering shoots of SJW in EPO for a few days. Then dab affected area with this cool tea. If you can’t get fresh herb, use tincture of SJW.

* Neem is an Indian tree with a powerful ingredient that works against many pests. Another Indian spice, turmeric, relieves itchy skin. So, here too, Duke recommends combining them to battle scabies. Mix 4 parts fresh neem leaves and 1 part turmeric, making a paste. Rub over self daily. One study had success rate at 98% after a few days.

If buying commercial neem product, follow manufacturer’s directions.

* Tea tree oil fights scabies parasite. Combine a tsp of tea tree oil to 5 tsps of vegetable oil. Apply to affected areas. Dilute if your skin is sensitive to tea tree oil.

* Onion contains quercetin which is an excellent skin soother. Boil the skins of 6 -8 onions in a quart of water for 20 minutes. Use cooled brew as an application.

* We wrote on the benefits of rosemary on another page. It also fights scabies infestation. Make a tea from a couple of tbls of herb and a cup of water. Apply on skin 2 - 3 times daily.

* American pennyroyal is another herb for scabies. Make a strong tea from herb and apply to affected areas. You can also use tincture, applying it to affected areas.

* Tansy can be made into a tea for scabies. Strain and cool, then apply onto affected areas.

* Oats can also relieve the intense itching from scabies. Just toss a couples of cups of oatmeal into warm bath and enjoy.

* Aloe, like some of the other great herbs including ginger and garlic, should very simply be in everyone’s cupboard. It is also one of the better herbal remedies for scabies. Use products with active aloe in them. Even better, dig out some of the gel from fresh leaves and apply to affected areas.
