* Saw palmetto is probably the best known of the home remedies for prostate. It has been used in Western Europe to treat BPH for many years. Studies confirm its effectiveness. It works as well as a leading drug, Proscar, but with fewer side effects. Dose: 160 mgs of extract 2x daily for several months.

* Licorice (glycyrrhiza glabra) prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone which is why it aids prostate health. However, long term use of large doses of licorice can result in hypertension, headaches and fatigue.

* Flaxseed contains essential fatty acids which decreases inflammation which can cause BPH. You can ground seeds and put into foods or shakes daily.

* African potato extract (Hypoxis rooperi) appears to support functioning of the prostate gland. If you can locate, take according to manufacturer’s instructions.

* Pygeum is an evergreen tree that grows in Africa. Extracts from its bark have been used in Europe to treat BPH. It decreases swelling and inflammation of the prostate. It also block the effects of testosterone on the prostate gland. Dose is 50 - 100 mgs of extract, 2x daily.

* Pumpkin seeds are used by Eastern Europeans for prostate problems. One reason for its effectiveness is that seeds contain Zinc. Zinc is thought to shrink the prostate gland.

European herbalists combine pumpkin seed oil with saw palmetto to treat prostate enlargement. You can eat 3 tbls of ground seed or take 500 mgs of pumpkin seed oil per day.

* Tomato, a humble miracle, contains a powerful antioxidant, lycopene which helps keep the prostate fit and healthy. Best used after it’s cooked with a little olive oil. Pass the sauce, please.

* Referenced on page 1, Dr. Duke recommends something he calls “Prosnut butter.” It includes pumpkin seeds, licorice and saw palmetto & is used as a nutty spread. Simply place ½ cup pumpkin seeds, one saw palmetto capsule and a few drops of licorice extract in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Use on crackers o just take a spoon of mixture.
