Very briefly, premenstrual syndrome describes the cluster of symptoms that can occur as a woman nears menstruation. These include moodiness, anxiety, breast tenderness, bloating and weight gain.

The symptoms result from hormonal changes which precede menstruation.

Roughly ¼ to ½ of all women experience some degree of PMS. About 10% experience very severe symptoms. So the condition is widespread and can seriously interfere with everyday functioning.

The following herbal remedies for premenstrual syndrome should really be helpful.

Take capsules as directed by manufacturer.

Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing.

* Black cohosh is endorsed by Germany’s Commission E for PMS. It is believed to relieve general symptoms of PMS, cramps and hot flashes.

You can make a tea from its root but it has an unpleasant aroma and bitter flavor. Another possibility is tincture, taken as directed.

Note: be sure you are getting black cohosh and not blue cohosh which should not be taken by most women.

* Buchu is one of the herbs for PMS because it helps release pooled water which leads to bloating. You can easily find buchu tea and it has a pleasant minty aroma and taste.

* Burdock is normally used as a tonic for the liver which, in turn, may aid in reducing irritability associated with PMS. It’s also a mild diuretic which means it helps to get rid of excess fluid which contributes to breast tenderness and bloating.
