It seems to work by decreasing the amount of calcium excreted in the urine, while increasing the amount of citrate excreted, which decreases the chances of stone formation. * Valerian is a popular herbal antispasmodic and sedative. Its sedating properties relax the ureter enough to allow a small stone to pass. Use Valerian tea or tincture every hour until stone passes. Only do this for a day or two. * Couchgrass is endorsed by the European Commision E for preventing kidney stones. Make a tea by steeping the chopped underground parts of the herb for 5 minutes in hot water. Drink several cups daily. * Horsetail is also endorsed by Commision E for treating kidney stones. It works by increasing urinary output. Only use in consultation with knowledgeable herbalist. * Skullcap is another antispasmodic-sedative. Drink a cup of skullcap tea or tincture 4 - 6x daily. * Goldenrod helps flush out kidney stones. Commission E recommends drinking a tea made from dried shhots. Drink 3 - 4 cups daily. * Wild yam is an antispasmodic but unlike valerian & skullcap, it is not a sedative so is an alternative if you need to stay awake. Use capsules or tincture as directed by manufacturer.
