* The first remedy comes from our side of the world. Black cohosh was given to us by the Native Americans and later adapted by American colonists for relief of menopausal symptoms including hot flashes. Studies have also shown black cohosh to relieve hot flashes and depression.

There are however many cautions to using black cohosh. Do not use black cohosh if you are experiencing menstrual flooding. Do not use if you are pregnant, nursing or have an estrogen related cancer. Do not use in cases of heart disease, taking sedatives or hypertension medications.

* Chaste berry (Vitex) is excellent for cooling hot flashes and reducing dizziness. It may also help with related depression as it increases production of the brain chemical dopamine. However, its beneficial effects take some time, perhaps after 2-3 months of use while long lasting improvement may take a years use.

They use Chinese Angelica, that they call “Dong quai,” to treat hot flashes and other discomforts. Angelica dilates the blood vessels which helps increase circulation. It may also help to stabilize estrogen and control body temperature which also reduce hot flashes.

Dose is 400 to 600 mg daily. You can also steep the plant root for 10 minutes to make a helpful tea.

* Essential oils may also ease hot flashes. In particular, basil or thyme may be especially helpful when used in a massage lotion, used in a foot rub or bath. Certainly, you can also scatter some freshly crushed basil or thyme into bath for nice effect.
