* Buchu (Agathosma betulina) is used by residents of the Western Cape of Southern Africa for hundreds of years. Buchu helps cleanse and tone the urinary tract. It’s one of the better herbs for bladder infections and entire urinary tract system.
* Cranberry & blueberry also contain compounds that prevent bacteria from sticking to bladder walls which helps prevent UTI. Unfortunately, you have to drink a lot of these juices for them to treat bladder infections. They may be better at preventing infections so using them before infections develop would be wise. If you can buy concentrated cranberry juice extract, take as directed.
* Uva-ursi, also called bearberry, has long been used for cleansing the urinary tract. It acts against E. coli and also increases urination, both helpful actions against UTI.

* Yarrow (Achillea mille folium) is a good herb for UTI because it contains substances called “alkamides” and healthy volatile oils that are rich in sesquiterpene lactones, which soothe and disinfect the urinary tract.
* Dandelion root is another excellent diuretic. Diuretics don’t cure infections but they do encourage urination and that helps flush bacteria out of the system. Can take dandelion as tea by steeping 2 tsps of dry root in hot water. Take 2x daily. Use commercial product as directed.
* Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) comes from the Eastern Mediterranean and is widespread throughout Africa. Its active ingredients include volatile oils, tannins, flavinoids, tocopherols and choline. Studies show it benefits general health and strengthens the immune system.
* Green Oats (Avena sativa) is an excellent tonic traditional used in folk medicine and by current herbalists. Its active ingredients are helpful for in supporting the immune system and the nervous system.
* St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been used as far back as ancient Greece. In addition to its helping depression, St John’s Wort also has other uses. It has also been shown to fight off bacterial and viral infections
* Echinacea is also a good herb for bladder infections and has long been used as an immune system tonic and so should be quite good for internal infections. Use tinctures of commercially prepared products as directed.
