What is heartburn?

Heartburn is a very painful condition felt in the upper digestive system. The pain often starts in the middle of the chest which is why it is often confused with an oncoming heart attack.

Heartburn is a essentially a pain connected to indigestion and too much stomach acid.

What causes heartburn?

The esophagus (a tube which leads from the mouth to the stomach) normally has a one-way valve that protects it from stomach acid coming up through it and out the valve. When a bit of stomach acid is forced up the unprotected esophagus, it causes a chemical burn felt as a severe pain we term heartburn.

Heartburn can lead to or indicate a more serious disorder so it is recommended that you consult your doctor if symptoms persist.
