Herbal remedies for ADD in children

* Skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia) ingredients include flavonoids, tannins, bitter, volatile oil and minerals. Traditionally used as a helpful nerve tonic, it also maintains emotional equilibrium and healthy attitude. Recently studied for its support of mood and calmness.

* German chamomile (Matricaria recutita), one of the pleasanter ADD herbs for children, gently relieves occasional nervous tension, decreases frustration caused by daily stresses such as overwork and fatigue. Its active ingredients can be obtained via teas and include volatile oil, flavonoids, valerianic acid, coumarins, tannins, salicylates and cyanogenic glycosides. Pleasant tasting, perfect with some raw honey before bedtime.

* Wild Oats (Avena Sativa) is excellent for alleviating common nervous irritability. Its active ingredients are plentiful and include saponins, flavonoids, minerals, alkaloids, steroidal compounds, Vitamins B1, B2, D, and E, carotene and wheat protein.

* Annual Nettle (Urtica Urens) is often used to maintain blood sugar levels that are already within the normal range. Here too, its active ingredients are plentiful and include natural histamine, formic acid, acetylcholine (important for memory functioning), glucoquinones, minerals, Vitamins A, B and C and tannins.

* Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is native to South Africa, not found anywhere else in the world! It is remarkably rich in healthy constituents containing magnesium, zinc and iron which help maintain a healthy nervous system. Zinc and iron, especially, support natural balance in the brain. Animal studies support its protective effects on the central nervous system (CNS) and ability to resist age-related accumulation of lipid peroxides in several regions of the brain.

I take rooibos as a tea. It may taste a bit strange to the Western palate but can be made quite pleasant tasting by adding some combination of anise, cinnamon and honey.
