Specific herbal remedies for ADD in adults

* Fatty acid supplements that come from either flax oil or primrose oil have some anecdotal support from people who report they were significantly helped by taking same. Obviously, consuming more products that contain flax oil such as specialty breads could be very helpful

* St. John's Wort is an herbal antidepressant that increases dopamine activity in the brain. It also lends few to no side effects. Dopamine helps you feel-good and aids concentration. The major ADD medications appear to work on dopamine.

To receive significant benefit you probably have to take two to three times the normally recommended dosage over 6 weeks for significant effect. Be sure to buy high-quality product because there is a lot of St. John's Wort on the market that have questionable quality. St. John's Wort is one of the most studied of all the herbs, frequently prescribed in Germany for mild depression. It has not yet been tested for use in treating ADD.

* Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a well-known all-around tonic and energizer. It is one of the better herbal remedies for ADD in adults as studies show that Rosemary can promote healthy blood flow to the brain.

Recent laboratory analysis has found that Rosemary contains acetyl-cholinesterase inhibitors, chemicals that prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain and its therapeutic potentials. Acetylcholine is a brain chemical which is involved in memory functioning, and deficiency in this chemical has been linked to serious mental diseases affecting memory and concentration.

* Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) is a highly prized and expensive Chinese herb. A study conducted over 3 months showed a significant increase in subjective "quality-of-life" scores among ginseng users. College-aged volunteers who took 100 mg of ginseng twice daily for 12 weeks experienced improvement in mathematical calculation speed.

Soviet research identified ginseng as a superior “adaptogen,” normalizing body functions, reducing stress and preventing disease. Animal studies showed that mice fed with Panax ginseng were able to learn tasks quicker, perform at a faster rate, and make fewer mistakes . Note: do not confuse Panax ginseng with either Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosis) or American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).

* Pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) and grape seed extract contain proanthocyanidin,a bioflavonoid with demonstrated anti-oxidant properties. Pycnogenol is fairly popular for treating ADD, with some scientific backing.
