Guidelines for taking the right herbs for your personal requirements and goals follow.
But before getting into the issue of assuring you're taking the correct supplements for your needs, a quick scenario.
So, you have a specific health condition or goal. You go to a search engine and type in some related search term and come upon a webpage which outlines a list of vitamins which can seemingly help you achieve your goal.
The list of supplements is long, perhaps a dozen or more nutrients.
What do you do to assure that you end up taking the correct supplements?
Do you just go out and buy every herb on the list and just start downing them every day? Do you just go purchase the least costly ones and cross your fingers? Perhaps you'll just buy the ones with cute sounding names or that the media is touting.
Those strategies just will not do. Even though herbal supplementation is generally safe and effective, it is not always safe or effective, for all people, at all times, suffering from all conditions.
A whole lot of factors are involved in taking the right herbs at the right times.
Certainly, it would not be smart to treat your body as if it's a human laboratory, pouring a stew of man-made and natural supplements into the pot and mixing it up. It's your body, the only one you have.
There's a better approach than some willy-nilly strategy.
Be smart. Get informed. Read on.
1) First, review the recommended herbal remedies carefully. Read the rationales for their use, respective usefulness and cost. Everything matters. Make notes that you could refer to later on.
2) Consider the fit between specific herbal remedies and your specific needs and goals. Some herbs may be a better fit for your particular purposes.
An example might be if you suffer from arthritis and cardiovascular problems. In that case, it might be wise to take ginger since it can address both arthritis and cardiac issues.
Certain supplements may not agree with you or might be harmful to you for whatever reason. Blood thinners, for example, would be dangerous to take before a medical procedure or if your physician has put you on medicine that thins blood.
3) Taking the right herbs begins with buying a good multiherbal (and multivitamin) and taking it every day. A good multiherbal may feature many of the nutrients you need, address other issues you are dealing with and provide a health insurance of sorts.
4) Buy one or, at most, two of the herbal remedies that seem to fit in with your requirements and try them out for a few weeks. Assess their effects. Decide if you need to add another supplement to your regimen or replace one supplement with another one.
5) If you're addressing your concerns with other lifestyle changes, as you should be, reevaluate your supplement protocol. You may need other nutrients to address current needs or you might be able to get rid of some supplements as your goals are realized.
For example, if you are taking herbs for hypertension and you start to exercise, the improved fitness and weight loss will reduce your high blood pressure. As that happens you should reevaluate your supplementation regimen.
6) For specific conditions that run their course, you could start tapering off as the condition is improved. For example, as cold and flu season end, you would begin tapering off from Goldenseal and Echinacea.
However, there are two necessary cautions here.
First, you should not abruptly cease taking some supplement. Gradually reduce daily dosage. See if your condition remains improved and then you could stop taking the supplement.
Secondly, unless you reside in a pristine environment, eat only organic foods, exercise religiously and have a stress-free existence, you can certainly gain from some supplementation.
A good multiherbal (and multivitamin and a little supplemental Vitamin C, some antioxidants and minerals), could go a long way to help keep you healthy and happy for a long time to come.
7) Reevaluate your previous concerns a little while after you stop taking targeted herbs. Has your condition revisited you and maybe worsened? Are you feeling well with no return calls from your nemesis?
The above plan should assure that you are taking the right herbs for your requirements helping to assure a longer, healthier, happier life ahead.
