Licorice is one of the most ancient & indispensable of the Chinese herbal remedies. The Chinese cited licorice 5,000 years ago in their great herbal bible Pen Tsao Ching (Classic of Herbs). That herb tome was attributed to their mythical emperor Shen Nung who is said to have experimented with herbs until his untimely death after consuming a poisonous plant.

Licorice remains popular in China even today.

The Chinese use licorice for asthma, depression, indigestion, inflammation & varicose veins.

Research supports its effectiveness in easing coughs, colds & sore throat.

Licorice is also anti-inflammatory & so is used to treat arthritis. It is also effective at treating gastrointestinal ulcers.

Licorice also speeds healing of canker sores & fights the herpes virus. It also aids liver function. So it is used to treat Hepatitis C & cirrhosis.

Licorice is generally effective against many infections including staph, strep & vaginal bacteria.

A very important property of licorice is that it boosts immunity. As such it may protect against certain forms of cancer & other immune related conditions.

Sprinkle powdered licorice on wounds to prevent infection & on herpes sores to kill herpes virus.

For canker sores, make a tea from licorice root & swish it in mouth before swallowing it. Take tincture & other commercial products as directed.

While licorice is high on any Chinese herbs index, there are some notable safety concerns with licorice ingestion.

Like few Chinese herbal remedies, do not consume indiscriminately as some persons have due to its pleasantly sweet taste.

The following populations should also avoid licorice: pregnant or nursing, sufferers of diabetes, glaucoma, hypertension, heart disease or stroke.

Motherwort is one of the Ancient Chinese herbal remedies thought to extend life.

Modern studies suggest that is possible as it has been shown to strengthen heart functioning & reduce hypertension.

Motherwort also gently relieves anxiety & insomnia.

This Chinese healing herb can be taken as a tea but be warned that it is very bitter so you will need to combine it with other herbs & sweeteners. Take tincture or commercial products as directed.

For persons taking blood thinners, take motherwort only under a doctor’ supervision.

Peppermint & other mints are also on any complete Chinese herbs index. One of the more impoortant Chinese herbal remedies, it was mainly used by Chinese herbalists to aid digestion & treat colds, coughs & flu.

The main benefits of peppermint comes from the oil that we commonly know as menthol.

Menthol is antispasmodic so it soothes our digestive muscles. For the same reason, peppermint also eases Irritable Bowel Syndrome but you must be sure that the ingested menthol reaches the colon. Coating it would assure that.

Menthol is also pain relieving & so is included in throat lozenges & skin creams.

Many of us have used menthol’s properties to relieve nasal, chest & sinus congestion.

Menthol also kills bacteria & viruses. For example it is useful in fighting herpes virus.

For use of peppermint as a decongestant, cough suppressant or digestive aid make a tea & drink 3 cups daily.

Consume tincture & other commercial preparations as directed.

Peppermint is safe but pure menthol should never be consumed as even a tsp can cause death.

Psyllium has been used by the Chinese to relieve constipation, diarrhea & hemorrhoids.

Smart. We know that psyllium absorbs liquid and so relieves liquidy diarrhea.

Because it swells in the colon & increases stool bulk while softening it, it also relieves constipation This stool softening also make psyllium ideal for relieving hemorrhoids. Speeding elimination of stool may also help prevent colon cancer linked to exposure to the toxins in stool.

Like other fibers, psyllium also binds cholesterol helping it to transit out of our system.

This Chinese healing herb is also good for diabetics as it reduces blood sugar levels.

A tsp of psyllium 3x daily in water or juice should provide many benefits. Be sure to consume a glass of liquid with each tsp of psyllium or you could experience the reverse of the helpful benefits.
